On a plane from Sri Lanka to the Philippines, i think on the 15th of this month, the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis talked about the recent Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris. While defending freedom of expression saying its a fundamental human right, he also said ‘you cannot insult the faith of others’
"One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people’s faith, one cannot make fun of faith. There is a limit. Every religion has its dignity...in freedom of expression there are limits.”
He gestured to a friend and said “If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch. It’s normal. It’s normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others.”now read the reaction of UK PM after the cut..
UK Prime Minster David Cameron doesn't approve of the comment Pope Francis made following the Charlie Hebdo massacre. Speaking about freedom of expression and its limit, the Pope said 'you cannot insult the faith of others and if you do, you can expect a punch'.
But opposing what the Pope said, Cameron said freedom of speech is important in an open society;
'I think in a free society, there is a right to cause offence about
someone's religion. I'm a Christian; if someone says something offensive about
Jesus, I might find that offensive, but in a free society I don't have a right
to wreak vengeance on them. We have to accept that newspapers, magazines, can
publish things that are offensive to some, as long as it's within the law. That
is what we should defend.'
