Falcons Battle Cameroon for 7th AWC Crown

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face Cameroon in the final of the 2014 African Women Championship (AWC) on Saturday.

Six-time champions Nigeria became the first side to progress to the finals of the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup following a 2-1 win over the Bayana Bayana of South Africa. The Falcons have now qualified for all seven editions of the women’s football showpiece and, even reached the quarter-finals in 1999, where they lost to Brazil.

Asisat Oshoala- the Most Valuable Player at the Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada last August- grabbed a first-half brace to send Nigeria to next year’s World Cup in the same country. Jane Refiloe grabbed South Africa’s consolation in the second-half.
Later on Wednesday, the Indomitable Lioness joined their West Africa counterparts after edging Cote d’Ivoire in extra time at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia.
Goals from Cameroonian Gaelle Enganamouit and Ines Tia’s equaliser six minutes later left Wednesday’s second semi-final deadlocked after 90 minutes.

Captain Christine Manie scored the decisive goal with just two minutes of extra time remaining, when he headed home from a corner to guide Cameroon into their maiden Fifa Women’s World Cup.
Les Lioness, who has never won the African women’s crown in 16 years, will be hoping to outwit favourites Nigeria in Saturday’s final.
The winners of the third-place play-off between South Africa and Ivory Coast complete the lineup of African countries for Canada 2015.
